Locker Lesson #7

The cheapest locker isn’t always the cheapest to own.

Locker Lesson 7: the cheapest locker is not always the cheapest to own, with smart locker hardware and maintenance, parts, time and support symbols.

A lower purchase price can be attractive. But the cost of a locker does not stop when it is installed.

Maintenance, replacement parts, staff time and ongoing support all affect what it costs to own and operate over the years.

Look beyond the initial quote

A door that needs regular adjustment, a lock that is difficult to replace or a system that needs frequent staff intervention can create costs that were not obvious at the point of purchase.

The right specification depends on how and where the lockers will be used. Materials suitable for a lightly used office may not be the right choice for a busy public venue or an exposed outdoor location.

Ask what ownership will involve

  • How durable are the cabinet, doors, hinges and locking hardware for the intended use?
  • What maintenance is recommended, and what will it cost?
  • Are replacement parts available, and can individual components be repaired or replaced?
  • How much staff time will be needed for everyday operation and exceptions?
  • What support is included, and which services or subscriptions are additional?
  • What does the warranty cover, and are there conditions such as regular maintenance?

Compare the whole cost

Compare like-for-like specifications over the same period. Include installation, software, support, maintenance and likely replacement needs alongside the purchase price. Keep confirmed costs separate from estimates.

A longer warranty can be valuable, but its scope matters as much as its length. Understand what is covered, what is excluded and who will provide help when it is needed.

The takeaway

The cheapest locker to buy is not always the cheapest to own. Look for a specification that suits the environment, with clear operating costs and dependable support.
